Reporters
Needed?>
How
would you or your homeschool student like to be a reporter for the
FHE newsletter? Think of the FUN and experience you could
gain? And it would like nice on those college
transcripts! We especially need a sports reporter. If
you are interested call Sharon Ward, 983-0879 or
email michellebrooks@triad.rr.com, or leave a message 631-8543.
Blessing
Network
The
Blessing Network, a non-profit organization founded by Marshall and
Pattie Parker assists area families in crisis situations. The
ministry has hundreds of clients, many with young children in the
home. “If you would like to provide help in ANY way for a family,
please contact us any time.
All year round we get calls for food, for help with utility
bills, clothes, in addition to our main emphasis, furniture and
appliances. Many times
the homeschool community has assisted our folks. Just let us know if you'd
like to do something, have items to donate or are interested in
assisting their ministry, please contact us at mparker6@triad.rr.com, www.blessingnetwork.org
or 945-4661. Our 24-hr voice mail number is 945-1817. We pick up and
deliver, and we are a non-profit corporation so you can even pursue
tax deductions if you wish.”
Second Harvest Food
Bank
Second
Harvest uses volunteer groups from 9am – 12noon on Saturdays to
help with food sorting, getting it ready to be delivered or picked
up on Monday. We've been going with a group from church to
Second Harvest about every 3 months on a Saturday morning. We
go to the warehouse and do whatever they ask of us; sorting food
though is primarily why we are there. First timers take a tour
of the facility and then we are shown where we will work sorting
food.
Children
from a mature 9 years old and up are welcome to join a parent in
helping out. If you think you would be interested in pursuing
this as a group, let me know and we shall see where the Lord
leads. ~ Shari Coburn

Riverwood
Therapeutic Riding
Center
Riverwood offers equine
assisted therapy to individuals with special needs. Our center
serves over 70 clients each week from Winston-Salem and its
surrounding communities. We are a non-profit center, which relies
heavily on volunteer power to assist our students. We currently
need volunteers to help as leaders or side walkers with our groups
that ride in the mornings and afternoons. We have positions
available Monday through Friday from 10am - 11:30am and 4:30pm -
6:30pm. If you enjoy being outdoors, can walk for about 45 minutes
(not continuously) and would like to help out within the community,
please call 922-6426 or email rtrc@windstream.net. This opportunity
is open to anyone 12 and older.
Newborns In Need
The
group collects any items that can be used by newborns and preemies,
like diapers, blankets, diaper bags, baby wipes, second-hand
clothes, etc. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each
month. More information can be found on their website at
www.newbornsinneed.org/. If you would like to become involved,
contact Pat White through her email at p.white@earthlink.net. They
also donate children’s clothes to the Wee Care Shop in
Winston-Salem, at 621 West 2nd St. between Broad St. and Marshall
St. The shop is in the back of a house at this address, and there is
a sign in the front yard that says Catholic Social Services and Hand
to Hand. The shop is open on Thursday from 10:30am-1pm and Tuesday
from 1:30-4pm.
CHILDREN’S
HOME GARDEN
This organization uses the property next to the county
children's home for a substantial garden where all the produce that
is harvested goes directly to the food bank and soup kitchen. This
is a tangible way for our families to get involved. Right now there
is a Methodist church helping out some, but they need and welcome
any others to help as often as they would like. In the past, scout
troops and other groups with kids and teens have and do
help.
We
will be going to water, weed, and/or harvest periodically during the
rest of the summer. If anyone would like to join us we would love to
grow this into a homeschool group project as
well.
